How to Find Your Own Personal Style

Personal style is the ultimate method of self-expression. As stated by Ralph Lauren, “Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever.” Lauren very aptly defined the key difference between fashion and style. Style is intimate, it varies person to person and it is the way in which one presents themselves to the world. Let’s talk about how to go about finding and curating your personal style.

First and foremost, inspiration is key. There are so many great fashion icons to look up to, no matter what you’re into. Many people try too hard to do something different but the truth is, in this day and age, there is very little that has not been done yet; so just do what you like and don’t be afraid to draw inspiration from others. Pinterest is a great place to search for your next muse, and you can create endless boards to envision your dream style.

One of the great joys of fashion is the endless possibilities. When you’re still trying to find what works best for you, don’t be scared to try something new; in fact, try as many things as you can! People are constantly evolving and bettering themselves; their styles should reflect this. Don’t feel limited by others' (or even your own!) expectations for you, and don’t let what you feel comfortable with stop you from reaching your potential.

Accessorizing is everything. Accessories can take a basic outfit to the next level, and are a great way to add your own touch. Whether it be a purse, hair, makeup, jewelry, hats, nails, or tights, there are infinite ways to elevate your look. Don’t neglect the more subtle aspects of your look, as often times they end up being the most important.

Another tip is to go with the seasons. It is natural for people to gravitate toward darker colors in the winter and vice versa. You’ll feel a lot more grounded by following each season’s colors and prints; you can even go as far as to lean into textiles.

For example, a fur coat in the winter is complemented by a winter color palette.

Of course, fashion has no rules, and by no means do you have to do this. I just have found that going with the seasons has helped me not only with my style but also to be more present, as fashion plays a crucial role in self-expression. When keeping in line with the seasonal colors, be mindful of your own personal color palette. Again, there are no rules in fashion; but if you’re feeling lost, finding out what looks best on you is always a good idea. You’ll find that some colors will enhance your natural beauty and flatter you more than others.

However, the most important “rule” of fashion is to be yourself. Whether it be vintage or current trends, don’t let anything but your own personal taste steer you away from your self-expression. Keep in mind that fashion transcends time, and wearing what you feel confident in will always be your best look! It is okay to incorporate current trends into your wardrobe, but make sure you stay true to yourself. Don’t wear something just for the sake of a trend or because it looks good on someone else. Authenticity is palpable and an original is always more desirable than a knock-off. It is always obvious when someone is wearing a costume rather than their own style. Just have fun with it!
